Started with one truck and a lot of stubborn stains
Ray Duarte spent his early twenties cleaning carpets for a franchise in Topeka. He liked the work but not the pressure to upsell every customer, so in 2006 he bought one truck-mounted unit and started Bluestem Carpet Care in Lawrence.
His wife Lena runs the schedule and answers most of the calls. They have kept the company small on purpose, so the person who quotes your job is the person who shows up to do it.
Why Lawrence homes keep calling us back
We would rather do one cleaning right than sell you three.
The owner is on your floor
Ray Duarte still runs most jobs himself. When he is not there, someone he trained is.
A real rinse, every time
We take the time to rinse out the cleaning solution, so your carpet does not pull dirt back in a month later.
No surprise upsells
You get a written price before we start. If a stain will not come out, we tell you instead of selling you another treatment.
Careful in your home
We wear shoe covers, pad the corners where hoses run and put furniture back where it was.

Dry and back to normal
Most carpets are ready to walk on in four to six hours. We leave air movers for faster drying when it helps.

Carpet cleaning questions
How long will my carpet take to dry?
Usually four to six hours, depending on the carpet, the humidity and how much airflow the room gets. Running a ceiling fan or the AC helps. We can leave air movers if you need the room back sooner.
Do I need to move my furniture?
We move sofas, chairs and tables ourselves and set them on protective tabs. Please clear small items, breakables and anything off the floor, and we will handle the rest. We do not move pianos, beds with storage or full bookcases.
Will the pet odor come back?
If the urine has soaked into the pad, surface cleaning will not fix it. Our enzyme and subsurface treatment handles most cases. If the pad is too far gone, we will tell you before you pay for treatment that will not work.
Are your cleaning products safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use pet-safe and child-safe solutions and rinse them out thoroughly. Once the carpet is dry, it is safe for everyone.
Why does my carpet get dirty again so fast after other cleanings?
Usually it is leftover soap. Sticky residue attracts dirt, so the carpet looks worse a few weeks later. We rinse with hot water until the residue is gone.
How often should carpets be cleaned?
For most homes, once a year. With pets, small kids or heavy foot traffic, every six months keeps the fibers from wearing down.
