Check who your Google Ads location settings actually reach

Before increasing a local advertising budget, compare location settings with real job addresses and qualified enquiries. A practical review for service businesses.

Start with the job location, not just the click

If your local ads bring enquiries you cannot serve, check geographic settings and the actual location of the requested work before increasing the budget. A city selected in a campaign does not, by itself, explain who can see an ad. AI can organize enquiry notes and highlight mismatches, but a person should approve targeting changes and judge whether a lead is useful.

Understand presence and interest

Google Ads distinguishes people likely to be in or regularly in a target area from people showing interest in it. The broader Presence or Interest option is the default described in Google’s documentation. Presence narrows that interpretation, but location signals are not perfectly accurate. Google also warns that narrowing the option can reduce impressions. Check the options available for your actual campaign type rather than applying one setting to every campaign.

Build a small enquiry review sheet

For a fictional cleaning company, collect the campaign name, enquiry date, requested service, job city or postal code, qualification outcome and reason for declining. Keep the customer’s current location separate from the property location. A landlord outside your region may need cleaning at a property inside it; rejecting that lead solely because of where the person lives would be a mistake. Use only the information needed for the review, and keep detailed customer records in the approved business system.

Turn the evidence into a proposed change

Compare two or three recent weeks of enquiries with the written service boundary. The output should be a short list of proposed changes, each with its reason: clarify the area in the landing page, correct an accidentally included location, or test a different location option. An assistant can label incomplete records for review, but it should not invent a job address. Mark those cases unknown and have the office ask the customer if the work might otherwise fit.

Test one decision without changing everything

Record the starting settings and the date of the approved change. Keep a record of budgets, offers and landing-page changes that could affect the comparison. Review qualified enquiries and booked jobs alongside cost, rather than celebrating fewer clicks alone. If someone else manages your ads, agree who can edit geography and how a change is reversed. A native campaign setting may solve the issue without any custom agent; use automation for the repetitive review only if its volume justifies it.

Calculate the value without promising savings

In an illustrative month, reviewing 30 enquiries for four minutes each takes two hours. If a structured intake reduces that to two minutes each, it releases one hour of office capacity, not an automatic payroll reduction. Any reduction in ad waste must be measured separately against actual spend and qualified jobs. Include setup, software and review costs. Exovara can help connect enquiry records to a practical campaign review so the next spending decision is based on work your team can deliver.
