Choose Google Business Profile categories that match your actual business

Prepare a focused category review using the work your business actually performs, then approve and verify changes without treating categories as keywords.

Start with what customers hire you to do

A category review begins with your real business, not a list of searches you would like to win. Write a plain description of the work customers hire you for and have the owner confirm it. An AI helper can organize candidate choices, but it should not add unrelated categories because another company appears to rank well.

Use Google's available choices

Google asks you to choose a primary category that best describes the business, using a specific option from its list where possible. You cannot invent a category. Additional categories should be a small, relevant selection rather than one for every service or product. Google also notes that category edits can trigger another verification request.

Keep the review tied to evidence

For a fictional property-maintenance company, prepare a short list of its current work and the categories actually available in the profile editor. Record the present primary category, proposed alternatives, supporting service information and questions for the owner. Separate work the company already performs from services it hopes to launch. Do not assume a category suggested by AI exists in the current list.

Avoid turning categories into a keyword list

Google's representation guidelines call for as few categories as needed to describe the core business, with specific and accurate choices. A company that coordinates a subcontractor occasionally should not automatically describe itself as every type of specialist it can introduce. Use the review to clarify the business identity; keep detailed service descriptions in the appropriate service and website content.

Approve once, then verify the actual result

The output is an owner-approved category choice with a dated before-and-after record. A person with profile access makes the edit and checks whether it was accepted or requires verification. Record unresolved states instead of reporting the change as live immediately. Check the resulting profile for accuracy and assess enquiries over time. Do not have an agent cycle categories daily to chase positions; no category choice guarantees a particular Maps ranking.

Decide whether ongoing automation is necessary

For one stable business, a careful manual review may be enough. If approved service changes frequently create conflicting records, an assistant can prepare a comparison for review. In an illustrative quarter, reducing three 30-minute comparisons to three 15-minute reviews releases 45 minutes of staff capacity. Include setup and supervision costs before commissioning automation. Exovara can help coordinate accurate profile and website information without making unsupported promises about search results.
