Start with something a customer needs to know
A useful project makes your services, coverage, limitations and next steps easier to understand. Choose a real question a prospective customer asks and inspect the page that should answer it. If the answer is vague or buried, improve that page before commissioning dozens of similar articles.
Ask for an evidence-based audit
For a hypothetical service business, an audit might identify an inaccessible service page, contradictory opening hours and an unclear enquiry process. Each finding should include the affected URL, evidence, proposed change and a way to verify the fix. Separate technical access, content quality and business outcomes; they are different parts of the work.
Be cautious about volume promises
Google’s guidance warns against creating variations of content primarily to manipulate rankings or generative answers. Ask why each proposed page deserves a separate URL. A genuinely different question can justify a guide; swapping a city name into the same answer does not add much for the reader. No consultant can guarantee that a particular AI answer will feature your business.
The source supports the named feature or principle. Implementation examples are proposals, not client results. Google: guidance for generative search
Check the finished result
Have someone unfamiliar with your company read the revised page and explain what you sell and how to contact you. Your developer should check that the page is accessible and that links and metadata reflect the intended content. Use available search reporting to observe changes over time, without treating one screenshot of an AI response as a performance measure.
Tie the project to a business decision
Track qualified enquiries and the work required to maintain accurate pages, alongside whatever search visibility data is available. Changes in rankings or clicks do not automatically mean more customers. Include research, implementation and maintenance costs. A smaller set of useful improvements is easier to evaluate than a volume package whose only result is more pages.
